Frequently Asked Questions

What are your greatest needs?

Truly, our greatest need is for people in our community to sponsor a shelter guest.  This provides financial support to our resource intensive shelter operations and encouragement to all of us.

Do you get federal funding?

We chase after every penny of federal funding we can possibly get.  Unfortunately, federal funding provides less than 10% of what it costs to run our shelter operations.

We receive free food from the Gleaners Food Bank and the Midwest Food Bank based on the need in our area.  However, to provide a balanced supply of food we also purchase food in large quantities from Gleaners.  We also receive past-it's-date bread and meat from local grocery stores.

Who is eligible to stay at the shelter?

Our shelter serves both individuals and families.  If a family has children, they stay together in a room or apartment.  If they do not have children, the spouses will sleep separately.

At this time, we are unable to house individuals with their pets.  If they can find arrangements for their pets, we can house them and help them to visit their pets periodically.

Our criteria for assessing guests who can stay at the shelter is complex, involves many factors, and we don't make it public.  However, individuals with certain pasts are not eligible for our shelter program (for example, registered sex offenders because we house kids).  The best way to find out if you are eligible is to call the shelter and have a conversation with a staff member.

Can I donate food or supplies?

Yes, we would love that!  However, to help our operations to be efficient, please use the information at the link below to identify whether we can receive a certain type of donation and when and where to bring it. This will help our staff give their focus to our guests and their needs.
